THE KEMMONS WILSON CONNECTIONBuilt around
a bigger idea.
Historic Whispering Woods Hotel holds a unique place in hospitality history. Constructed by Kemmons Wilson, the founder of Holiday Inns, the property served a purpose beyond providing lodging: it was a dedicated training facility for owners and general managers of Holiday Inn hotels and resorts.
Its location near Olive Branch Airport—also owned by Wilson at the time—connected the hotel with a broader vision for hospitality in Olive Branch. Training here helped carry Wilson’s standards and practices across the growing Holiday Inn network.
THE UNIVERSITY YEARSA campus built for learning.
The original Holiday Inn University brochure describes an ambitious approach to management development. Its educational mission joined practical hotel operations with the organization’s philosophy: preparing people to lead while giving them an understanding of the principles behind the business.
01 / LEARNINGMore than a classroom.
The brochure’s classroom plans included a theater-style presentation room, smaller rooms for specialized training, and space for individual instruction. The campus was designed to bring study, discussion, and practical learning together.
02 / LIVINGA residential experience.
The original plans described resident halls connected with education and student-service spaces. They also outlined a dining room and practical training areas, bringing the experience of running a hotel into daily campus life.
03 / CONNECTINGRoom to reflect.
The brochure presented a setting for both study and relaxation, with landscaped grounds, places to gather, and recreational plans. A central lobby and a proposed Holiday Inn History Room gave the campus a shared focal point.
The legacy continues.
Today, Historic Whispering Woods Hotel carries that tradition of bringing people together into its role as an independent hotel and conference center. Guest stays, meetings, and celebrations continue the property’s long connection with hospitality.
